How it all began:
I have worked at the Avon-Washington Township Public Library for four years. I had never considered the library to be a particularly old library. The building seemed to be too new. But a couple years ago, the library began a year-long celebration of the its 90th anniversary.
"But this library looks much younger than that!" I thought to myself, "It simply can't be 90 years old."
I was right. I was also wrong. The building where I was working on a daily basis was not 90 years old; far from it, in fact. However, the Avon-Washington Township Public Library as an institution is indeed older than 90 years.
The library had just received a grant to create a History Room and were seeking donations of anything related to library history or the history of the surrounding township. Information is being gathered, but it takes a bit of time to organize, catalog, digitize and publicize historical information. There are currently two interns who are working closely with the Library Historian, Ms. Susan Truax, to accomplish just that task. Ms. Truax assisted me in locating some of the old Board Minutes, a couple volumes of newspaper clippings, and several folders worth of letters, notes and newsletters. Notes on these resources can be found in the Bibliography section. My compiled Timeline is also available, though Gaps will be noticed. Additionally, I am left with one real Mystery that I would love to solve.
